State Department may ask tourists for social media history

Tourists may be asked to reveal their social media activity before entering the country, according to new guidelines expected to be issued this week.

The State Department will propose new rules on Friday that will require most immigrants and tourists to hand over social media history in addition to phone numbers and email addresses, according to The Washington Times.

Travelers will also be asked about possible family connections to terrorism.

The proposal will published for public comment Friday and the policy is likely to be finalized later this year, the paper said.
