Ryan Gosling Laughed During Oscars Mix-Up Because He’d Thought Someone Had Been Hurt

“I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head.”

Like a high schooler tickled by a moment of mayhem in his solemnly scheduled day, Ryan Gosling seemingly couldn’t help but let out a giggle in the chaos onstage as the Oscar winner for Best Picture was announced last month.

An Associated Press photographer captured the “La La Land” actor’s reaction upon learning “Moonlight” had actually won the top honor after he and his colleagues had already taken the stage in an image that was, of course, shared widely on the internet.

But now we know Gosling hadn’t just thought the whole situation was absurdly funny ― he’d thought someone might’ve been hurt.

And realizing that wasn’t the case, that someone had simply made a very public blunder, the actor felt relieved.

So he laughed.

Gosling explained his reaction at Las Vegas’ Adobe Summit on Wednesday, per Entertainment Weekly.

“What really was happening as I was watching ― it was surreal, anyway ― I was watching people start to have this panicked reaction in the crowd and guys were coming on with headsets, and I felt like someone had been hurt,” he explained, as reported by the outlet.

“I thought there was some kind of medical situation, and I had this worst-case scenario playing out in my head. And then I just heard ‘Moonlight’ won, and I was so relieved that I started laughing.”
