Was Justin Timberlake trolling us?
Earlier this week, he announced his upcoming new album, “Man of the Woods,” with a trailer that saw him looking very rugged, communing with nature and talking about the “personal” bent of many of his new tracks.
But fear not — the album’s first single, which dropped Thursday night, isn’t some country song about the simple joys of chopping wood and eating only what he kills.
Instead, the Timbaland-co-produced “Filthy” is a slinky, electro-R&B jam that fans of classic Timberlake cuts such as “Rock Your Body” and “SexyBack” will love. And the video, directed by Mark Romanek, is as far away from nature as you can possibly get.
In the sci-fi-tinged production, Timberlake channels Apple’s late CEO, Steve Jobs. He’s a turtleneck-clad inventor at a futuristic tech event, unveiling his latest creation: a randy robot with some provocative dance moves, and — judging by some of its gestures — a few impure thoughts, too.
Timberlake is set to release one new song with an accompanying video every week until the album’s release date on Feb. 2. On Feb. 4, the 36-year-old will perform at the Super Bowl LII halftime show in Minneapolis.
