Comedian and actress Aisha Tyler lives in Los Angeles, but calls herself a “New York commuter,” since she often comes to the city for work. She wrapped filming the final season of CBS’ “Criminal Minds” earlier this year, and when she’s not hosting “Whose Line is it Anyway,” which started its new season in June, the 48-year-old is drinking in the sights and tastes of New York City. Tyler tells The Post how she likes to spend her weekends.
New York is such a good bar city. They’re all about curating an experience for the people who come in, about creating drinks that are unique. I think they go hand-in-hand with great eating. The bars that I like are bars that are more than just a place to grab a glass of wine or cocktail.
Almost every time I go to New York, I go to the Dead Rabbit, which is in a beautiful 200-year-old building with an extraordinarily talented staff. They have an amazing Sunday brunch with an authentic Irish breakfast — which Irish people just call a fry-up. They have the best Irish coffee in the world. You feel like you’re stepping into a 19th-century bar when you go there. It’s all the way at the bottom of Manhattan, so you have this view of the Statue of Liberty, and Battery Park is so beautiful . . .
In Brooklyn, I love Long Island Bar on Atlantic Avenue. They have a famous bartender there, he invented the Cosmopolitan. People think it’s an old cocktail, but it’s really only a couple decades old. It’s an old-school place in kind of a converted diner with beautiful little vinyl booths. [They serve] spinach dip and fried clams and stuff like that.
