5 surprising things about Florence Henderson

Florence Henderson will be remembered as America’s TV mom but she was full of surprises, too. Here are a few lesser-known items from her résumé.

1. She starred in a Weird Al Yankovic video

In 1996, she sent up Michelle Pfeiffer’s inner-school teacher from the film Dangerous Mindsin Amish Paradise, which saw her staring down Weird Al as he promised, “If I finish all of my chores and you finish thine, then tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 1699.”

2. She was a certified hypnotherapist

Henderson conquered her fear of flying thanks to sessions at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, where she met Dr. John Kappas, the man who would become her second husband and inspire her to spend two years training as a hypnotherapist in her own right, using the skill to help the families of the terminally ill.

3. She counseled Peter Brady

According to Henderson, Christopher Knight (who played Peter Brady) asked her to provide on-air counseling for his VH1 reality show My Fair Brady, which charted the course of his whirlwind romance with America’s Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry, whom he met in 2005 while filming VH1’s celebrity roommate reality series The Surreal Life. Henderson tried unsuccessfully to convince the couple to slow down.

“They didn’t take my advice at all,” Henderson said when asked about their meeting while promoting another project at the Television Critics Association 2008 summer press tour. “And as you may have seen, they did get engaged and they did get married.”

They divorced in 2013.

4. She freaked Ozzy Osbourne out in a Super Bowl commercial

We’re not sure if he was more confused by waking up next to Henderson or finding the Osmonds in his kitchen during this 2003 spot for the short-lived Pepsi Twist.
